Course Background

Cultural competence is an integral part of providing quality, equitable, and safe patient-centred care.  Culturally competent care is a process occurring on many levels, but can be summarised as caring for families and patients in a respectful manner that takes into consideration:

  • the diversity of their social, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds and beliefs, and

  • how these affect health beliefs, behaviours, and outcomes.

Therefore, cultural competence healthcare means provision of care that meets the cultural and linguistic needs of the patients and families.  This course contains highly useful components of cultural competence that are useful not only for doctors, nurses and allied medical personnels but also social workers working in the field of healthcare.

Course Objectives

  • Recognise differences across cultures

  • Describe strategies for providing culturally competent care 

  • Apply cross-cultural competency skills in clinical situations

  • Recognise how personal biases affect the patient/family-

Course Duration

There are altogether 8-10 lessons.  Each lesson for 2 hours.  However, all the lessons can be tailored to the needs of the students as well as the duration of the course can be adjusted accordingly. Few topics can also be taught in a workshop mode.

Handling Workplace Diversity 

Course Background

With the world becoming more mobile and diverse, diversity has taken on a new importance in the workplace.  Equipping employees with cultural competence skills have therefore become absolutely vital for a peaceful and progressive workplace.  Participants of this course will be able to use strategies for removing barriers and stereotypes, and to encourage diversity in the workplace and even through their community.

This course will help participants understand what diversity is all about, and use skills such as active listening to receive messages in a diverse population, employ effective questioning techniques, and communicate with strength.

Cultural Competency Training for Diplomats 

Course Background

lThis course is an introduction to cultural diplomacy for people working in foreign policy, public policy, arts, culture and heritage.  It is of paramount importance to educate a generation of people capable of communicating effectively and working together with representatives of other cultures. This course is designed to further this aim.  The objective of the course is to help students realise the salient features of their own culture, to compare it with other cultures and to learn to communicate with people respecting the differences and making the best possible use of them.
